The Mirror Meditation

Humans have been fascinated by reflections since the dawn of time.

We’re drawn to them, because a part of us recognizes that they are representative of the deeper truth of reality:  everything is a reflection.
This meditation came from attempting something entirely unrelated, yet turned into this simple, yet world-altering technique.

All you need for this is a candle, a mirror, and a darkened room with still air (I find a bathroom works well).

Place your candle so that it is nearby, but off to one side, so that the flame does not show in the mirror.

You’ll want to be sure your candle is placed so that your breath will not cause it to flicker, but so that your face is fairly well illuminated.

Once you have your candle placed, the room darkened, and you are sure that you will not be disturbed for a while, begin with your breathing.


For this technique you will be using a “square” breathing pattern.

To do this, breath in for four slow counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts, and hold for four counts.

The number that you count to is unimportant, only that the length of time for each inhalation, hold and exhalation is the same (like the sides of a square).

Once you have established your breathing pattern, look your reflection directly in the eyes.  If you have a question for you inner self, you may hold it in mind.

As you gaze at yourself in the mirror, allow your awareness of the totality of the image to expand.

(You can equate this to slightly defocusing your eyes to see the picture in a “3D picture puzzle” or “stereogram”)

Continue breathing in a square pattern as deeply and slowly as you are able.  Keep your eyes loosely focused on your reflection’s eyes.

At some point, your vision should begin to shift, and you’ll begin to see some rather interesting things.

Initially, what you’ll be seeing has to do with the so-called “Troxler Effect” on which a rather interesting experiment was performed.

Our aim is to get past your mind’s hocus-pocus and get to some real vision.  You’ll know you’re beginning to get somewhere when you begin to see your entire reflection sort of “grey out.”

Keep going past this stage, and you’ll begin to see some truly interesting things.

Play with the focus of your eyes, and you’ll be able to make out your own bio-energy patterns.

You may even see yourself in a whole new light!
