The scene: evening, home with the family.
The morning was a bit hectic, and someone said something that wasn’t very kind, and you laughed it off, knowing that he’s just not a morning person.
That day, you went to where you go during the day; work, school, the playground with your children.
For some reason, you keep playing that mean little thing back in your head, thinking of things you could have said.
But now that you’ve thought of what you could have said, you realize what they could have said…
Well, now you’ve got to retort to that, because they can’t have the last word, can they?

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you’re always talking to yourself.
“I’d better do this right”
“I hope no one sees me.”
“Why can’t I just be happy?”
This self-talk is usually just below the surface of awareness.
During our mini-meditation session, we learned a simple, short way to quieten those voices, but why not use them?

There has been a huge growth in the interest in “opening the Third Eye,” or “awakening the pineal gland” or countless variations on the theme. This is wonderful!
The growth of interest in spiritual methods and realities is a phenomenal announcement that we, as a species, are becoming more self-aware and aware of those around us.
But I find that there are countless misunderstandings about just what happens when your 6th chakra “opens,” making it very frustrating, indeed, for someone seeking this very special experience.

One of the biggest misunderstandings of meditation that I’ve found, both in myself and others, is that to meditate, one must sit silently and do nothing for a specific period of time.
If you’re a naturally “still” person, this can be bliss in, and of, itself.
If you’re a more active kind of person, this can be friggin booooooooooring!
(Ironically, that boredom might be exactly what you need to master your inner stillness!)
However, meditation isn’t just sitting in lotus position on a yoga mat on the floor and breathing in incense.
So let’s clear up a basic meditation misunderstanding.

Sit or stand in a quiet space.
Close your eyes and begin taking deep, regular breaths.
As you breath in, imagine a beam of pure, white light coming from above you, centered on the crown of your head.

As we’ve covered in other posts, our minds tend to translate certain aspects of our reality into ways that we may more readily understand.
The key to getting these translations from your subconscious is to simply “listen,” by which I mean, just quieten your mind for a bit and just observe.
In this particular exercise, we are going to play with one of those “translations”, but we’re going to do so by giving our subconscious mind the metaphor through which to work.
Now, there are a few techniques which you will find recurring over and over again, so please, if you haven’t familiarized yourself with this basic technique, then please take a minute and read it over.

Spirit guides, guardian angels, Higher Self, God Self, Holy Spirit…
My experiences suggest that they are all one and the same; furthermore that they are aspects of our very being.
In truth, what we may call our “Spirit Guide” we may very well call our “Higher Self” or our “Higher Consciousness”.
We may even call it simply “I AM.”

The reality is that you are light.
All frequencies of light.
But for our analogy, we are simply helping your mind recognize the higher frequencies of light so that you may get to know that “higher” aspect of yourself.

It has been said that we are God experiencing God being God.
I think that is a beautiful thing.
We try to understand our reality, manipulate it, feel things about it, but just what is it?

In over a decade of research and practice, I’ve come across literally thousands of meditation techniques, hundreds of explanations as to what meditation is, and, were I to rely on all of this, I still wouldn’t be able to tell you!
However, I am a big fan of Occam’s Razor and gravitate toward the absolute simplest of explanations.
So, let’s ask the question, “What is meditation?”
