How to Achieve Enlightenment

We have many ideas about enlightenment.

None of them are enlightenment.

They are simply ideas about enlightenment.

Throughout the known times, many teachers have come to show us the way, but they were able to offer us but glimpses, way-signs and images.

This is because enlightenment is beyond the capacity of words to describe.

Those teachers came, and their words were recorded and misunderstood.

Religions sprang up around them, and still they were misunderstood.

A true Teacher does not come to give you mere religion.

A true Teacher comes to give you enlightenment.

The path to enlightenment can compared to a narrow path through a wide open plain.

The path can be compared to a ship sailing across a wide ocean, following tightly her course.

This means that there are many, many ways to enlightenment, yet the shortest way is a straight line.

This means that there are many, many ways to enlightenment, yet the shortest way is a curved line.

The key component to the Way is determination.

Single minded, focused, unwavering determination.

There are many vessels that can take us there.

Christianity can take us there.

Buddhism can take us there.

Islam can take us there.

Any religion can take us there.

Sex can take us there.

Sitting can take us there.

However, it is crucial that we not mistake the vessel for the Way.

We must not love the vessel more than we love the Way and the journey thereon.

There are many ways, but only one Way.

This make sense if you live it.

There are useful ways, and there are less useful ways.

For example, a monk may attain enlightenment by sitting in focused effort for a length of time.  This is useful to one who is a monk, but not as useful, perhaps, to one who is, say, a housewife, or a carpenter.

A musician may attain enlightenment by allowing himself to become married to his instrument, to feel as though his very being is being expressed by the pluck of a string or a breath of air.

This is useful to one who is a musician, but not as useful, perhaps, to one who is a monk.

There are many ways, but only one Way.

And do not think of this, so much, as a way that one must walk upon.  Where are you going?

Do not think of this, so much, as something you can wait for, for how will it catch up to you?

Let your outward expression become your inward.

The thing you are holding on to is no different than the thing you are not holding on to.

You may feel as though you are trapped within, unable to experience the Oneness of all things; continue on!

You’re nearly there!

Strive ever the more!

Faster!

Every fiber of your being must be involved with your quest!  Every thought must be your quest!

Every sound, every sorrow, every thought, every sight may be the one to bring you into awareness!

The one unifying theme of all the ways is single-minded determination.

Let your mind become one-pointed, and use that point to thrust yourself through the veil!

Breathe!

There is no difference between you and anything else.

May this be useful to you on your journey.
